Lo scrittore Beat William S. Burroughs prese questo concetto di base - la "Cut-Up Technique" e ci mise il suo tocco personale. Tra il 1961 e il 1964, Burroughs pubblicò "The Nova Trilogy", una serie di tre romanzi sperimentali costruiti con il suo metodo di cut-up. Spesso considerato il suo lavoro definitivo di scrittura cut-up, The Soft Machine, il primo romanzo della trilogia, ha cucito insieme pagine da una serie di suoi manoscritti scritti tra il 1953 e il 1958.
