Questa Bibbia, capolavoro tra i manoscritti miniati ("Illuminated Manuscripts"), era considerata il libro più costoso del suo tempo, fu commissionata dal primo duca di Ferrara Borso d'Este senza badare a spese e realizzata da artisti italiani del Rinascimento. Il manoscritto seguì la famiglia Este da Ferrara a Modena, dove rimase fino a quando la famiglia perse il controllo della città nel 1859 e l'ultimo duca fuggì a Vienna. La Bibbia rimase tra le famiglie nobili europee fino a quando l'ultima imperatrice d'Austria la vendette a un collezionista d'antiquariato parigino nel 1922. Giovanni Treccani donò la Bibbia allo Stato dopo averla acquistata nel 1923 per 3,3 milioni di franchi francesi.
