Alvy Ray Smith, nato nel 1943, è uno dei pionieri della computer grafica e cofondatore della divisione computer della Lucasfilm e successivamente di Pixar.

Dopo la laurea in ingegneria elettrica ed essere stato professore associato alla New York University e a Berkeley ha lavorato a SuperPaint (primo programma di grafica raster) allo Xerox PARC. E' uno degli inventori del "canale alpha" e ha creato e diretto le immagini del "progetto Genesis" che appaiono in Star Trek II.
